THE OPPORTUNITY

There are a number of plans which are relevant to the redevelopment of Portobello; which include; (1) the Wolverhampton Community Plan (2002–12) which represents a vision of how the quality of Wolverhampton can be improved over the next ten years. The priorities for action, directly relevant to Portobello are as follows:

  • Safer City
  • Green City
  • Healthy City
  • A City of communities and neighbourhoods

(2) Wolverhampton Unitary Development Plan which shows the site as a housing renewal site with the overall vision of the UDP being to create a more sustainable Wolverhampton by improving the economic, social and environmental well being of everyone in the City; to contribute to raising the quality of life of residents and to support the development of strong and inclusive communities.

Portobello is situated in one of the designated strategic regeneration corridors (A454 Willenhall Road corridor) and it is considered that the residential development of Portobello will be relevant to the following initiatives under this policy.

  • Public transport improvement and the creation of better linkages between the corridors and nearby priority neighbourhoods.
  • Encouraging high quality high density housing development.
  • Improving environmental conditions and image.
